Tencent Internship
Improving the User Experience of QQ Mini Program.
Overview
During my seven-month internship at Tencent in Shenzhen, I had the unique opportunity to work on both enterprise-side and consumer-side projects for the QQ Mini-Program Platform.
As part of the ISUX (Internet Social User Experience) Department ISUX, I contributed to over ten projects, focusing primarily on enhancing the overall user experience and functionality of the QQ Mini Program.
This internship allowed me to work with an incredibly talented team on real-world projects that directly impacted millions of users. Contributing to such a popular platform not only felt rewarding but also gave me a deep sense of responsibility and fulfillment as I saw the tangible results of my work reaching a massive audience.
Projects That I Involved
Enterprise-Side Projects
I collaborated with the enterprise-side development team to optimize business-related tools within the QQ Mini Program. I worked on improving user flows and interface elements to make these tools more efficient and user-friendly for businesses. This involved conducting user research to identify pain points and presenting design solutions that aligned with both user needs and business goals.
02
Consumer Side Projects
On the consumer side, I helped enhance the functionality of consumer-facing mini-programs within QQ. My focus was on improving the overall user experience by refining key interaction points and ensuring that the design was intuitive and easy to use for a wide audience. I contributed to redesigning the navigation and onboarding processes, improving both engagement and retention rates.
03
Optimized the Search Function for QQ Mini Program
The search function in the QQ Mini Program serves as a key entry point for users looking to explore relevant apps, features, and games. However, the previous design was cumbersome and made it difficult for users to discover the content they were interested in.
I led the redesign of the search function to make it more precise, organized, and aesthetically appealing. The new design simplifies the user journey by improving categorization and relevance, allowing users to easily find high-quality games and features tailored to their interests. This improvement not only enhanced the overall user experience but also increased engagement with the platform’s offerings.
Takeaways
01
Adapting to Real-World Constraints
In a professional setting, product design extends beyond user needs. It involves balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders and working within technical, time, and business constraints. My role as a product designer is to prioritize these competing needs, ensuring that the final product not only meets user expectations but also aligns with business goals and stakeholder approval.
02
Taking Ownership of Projects
In my professional experience, I learned the importance of taking full ownership of a project—from conception to final delivery. This includes navigating challenges, making key decisions, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. Owning a project helps ensure that every aspect of the design aligns with the overall strategy and vision.
03
Balancing Complexity with Usability
Enterprise design often requires managing complex systems and industry-specific terminology. However, the key to successful design, whether for enterprise or consumer users, is simplifying the user experience. By understanding users’ challenges and optimizing workflows, I ensure that interfaces are intuitive and align with user expectations, regardless of the complexity involved.
